“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5
Chuck Swindoll once said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” There’s quite a bit of truth in that statement. Your life, as it is, says more about your attitude than it does about your experiences.
Jesus was the Son of God. He had all the glory of Heaven at His fingertips. In coming to Earth, He chose to empty Himself and take on the form of a bond-servant (Philippians 2:7). That would be equivalent to a King choosing to become a pauper.
If you’re like me, that would not be the life you would choose. Yet, that is the life our Savior chose on our behalf. And, guess what. He never belly ached about it. Jesus walked the road to the cross willingly, with joy (Hebrews 12:2), – for you and me!
When life has not turned out quite as you had hoped, how do you respond? Do you become embittered? Are you resentful? Or, do you choose to have hope that there is a greater plan at play? The choice is yours. No one determines your attitude but you. No one can choose your attitude for you. You have to choose it. You have chosen it. What is your attitude right now?
- In general, how have you responded to your life’s experiences? Are you better as a result of those experiences? Or, are you bitter as a result of them?
- Your life, as it is right now, says what about your attitude?
- How would those who know and love you best describe your attitude about life?
- Would you say your attitude is life-giving or death-dealing?
